Fall in Love in Prague: Czech

This past weekend Alex and I adventured to Prague and I am almost at a loss for words with this city. Pretty much from the moment we landed, I fell in love. We stepped outside into the chilly fall air, took the bus to our hostel, while watching fireworks over the river and I was hooked. Prague 100% has stolen my heart. I’ve already prepared my parents that if Donald Trump becomes president, you can pretty much find me on the next flight to Prague.

We got to Prague around 10pm and headed right to the hostel. We struggled a little bit finding transportation there but eventually worked out the right bus/taxi combo. Our hostel, The Mosaic House, DSC_0271was great. It is a super modern place that has only been open for a few years. It is all really trendy and very eco-friendly with a water recycling program and everything. There is a decent sized public bar with a stage and a restaurant as well. We checked in, and headed up to our room, opened up the door and were hit with a wall of cologne; this should be interesting. From there we head out to find some real Czech food. We ended up at an Irish bar that sold Czech food. A little confusing and we hated that you can smoke in the restaurants but we were starving. We shared some chicken dish that was good and I had a beer, which is cheaper than water at some restaurants (more reasons to love Prague). The food was nothing too special but the beer was really good. Learned a fun fact that the original Budwiser and American Pilsner beers are based off of Prague’s Pilsner Urquell beer.

The next morning we woke up a little early to start a three hour walking tour around Prague. This was probably the best decision that we made all weekend. We joined the tour that left from our hostel and headed off into the city. Our tour guide told us that Prague is broken into a few different sections, our hostel being located in “New Prague”. We saw the New Towne Square and the National MuseumDSC_0020 of Prague, which isn’t open for the next three years. It was a little pointless for us to go up there but the building was cool. We then ventured to the Old Towne Square and the Astronomical Clock which is the oldest functioning astronomical clock in the world. The clock was really interesting but the time didn’t look right to me. Maybe I just don’t know how to read it. The town square was beautiful and I absolutely loved the architecture. The buildings are just so old and there is so much to look at. From there we went to the Old Jewish Village where they have the oldest synagog as well. Then we walked around a little more and hiked up to the metronome park to get the best view of the whole city. We went to a little restaurant on-top of the mountain and had cappuccinos while soaking in more of the beautiful weather and views.

DSC_0093We then ventured over to the Prague Castle. I have never seen something that is quite so detailed. The Castle sits on top of a mountain that overlooks all of Prague and is absolutely massive. There is the church that’s the main part of the Castle but there are a bunch of building at connect together to create the castle as a whole. Lots of fountains and tons of detail on all the buildings, including paintings and sculptures, not to mention the views, make it an unbelievable sight. After the castle we found a super cute cafe and had lunch along with these pastry like things called Trdelnik that are hollow and cooked over a grill. We walked across the Charles Bridge in the center of the city. The bridge itself has a bunch of religious statues all along the way. There were a few statues where people were saying prayers and rubbing the pictures. We just followed along with what everyone else was doing.

We headed home and met the crazy Brazilians that were our roommates for the remainder of the weekend. During the walking tour we met two nice girls from Australia that were traveling and staying in our hostel as well. All of us met together and got some dinner and then headed to a super cool three story bar. The outside of the bar has tons of lights and weird spinning things but the inside of the bar is all made out of car parts. Lots of things lit up and moved and there were tons of pipes and engines hanging from the ceiling. There were some crazy DJs and the people in the bar were a little different but overall it was fun experience.DSC_0067

The next morning, we set out to find the famous John Lennon Wall. We got a little bit lost but found a beer monastery which was pretty cool. Essentially the monks started making beer out of side rooms in church’s to fund the final details of creating the church. After that we finally found the Lennon Wall which is absolutely beautiful. There is so much color and detail with lots of different sayings and pictures all over. Alex and I basically had a full on photoshoot in front of the wall along with a couple who was taking their 12049643_10207893089232080_8460130348733324962_nwedding pictures. After leaving the wall, we went back toward the river and rented a little paddle boat to mosey around the Charles River. It was great to get a different view of the city. After freshening up, we went to this perfectly adorable restaurant for dinner. We had pumpkin soup and pumpkin risotto with arugula and salmon. I could only taste it a little because of a cold and of what I could was absolutely amazing. Can only imagine what it would have tasted like with fully functioning tastebuds. Later that night we met up with our Australian friends along with some friends from New Zealand and Canada that we had met along the way. We set out to a bar to start a “Boat Party” on the Charles River. We met some great guys from Switzerland and had a great night and it was the perfect way to wrap up our time in Prague.

Overall I am completely in love with Prague and can not wait to go back again.

Aside from Prague, this past week my roommates and I celebrated my birthday. I am so lucky to have such
fantastic roommates here, who made my second 21st birthday even better than the first one. Thank you girls so much! We also went to a tapas cooking class and learned how to make some traditional Spanish tapas which was lots of fun.12105993_1039281006103716_123093773010989563_n

Struggling with missing home still, which always happens around my birthday, but my parents will be here in about a month so thats great. Having a phone would probably make things a little easier. If anyone wants to make a call to Customs in Madrid for me and tell them to give it up, that would be fantastic!

That’s the long and short of life over here. Next stop Amalfi Coast of Italy.

Have a great week y’all!

Mucho amor
